Endodontic treatment

Good endodontic treatment is a really strenuous procedure for both patient and dentist.

The most common cause of inflammation are bacteria, which get to a root system of the tooth mostly from untreated tooth decay. The aim endodontic treatment is to save the tooth from an extraction.

It is always better to preserve the original tooth even at the price of high expenses related to a high-quality root canal treatment.

Endodontic treatment includes:

1. Removal of a tooth pulp from the pulp cavity
2. Clearing, widening and machining of root canal inner walls in a range of 1 to 1,5mm from a tip of the root and follow-up disinfection.(The machining of root canal walls is essential for later filling but it is also important due to the removal of an infected decayable mass from pulp cavity and canal walls.
3. Hermetic filling of prepared root canal. Well-made root filling will prevent any further spreading of bacteria through the root canal

The tooth canal, which is not perfectly treated and filled can cause further health complication and eventually a tooth loss. You should take into account that the length of the treatment and a number of visits are not able to be estimated. It depends on a type of tooth,  number and complexity of root canals and on a default state of the tooth before treatment.

Another fact you should consider is that the endodontic treatment doesn´t have to be successful. There is no treatment in medicine with 100% success rate. With right technological methods, high-quality tools and materials for machining and filling of root canals, the success rate is high (even 90%). Finely endodontically treated tooth can last tens of years or even the whole life in a patient´s mouth. Right post endodontic treatment is essential for a tooth lifespan as well: Amalgam filling, which expands during the setting, should not be applicated. The tooth should be reinforced and optimally provided with a crown.

Complicating factors, decreasing the success rate, are often: neglecting the deterioration of the tooth, complicated anatomy of a root canal system, improper former treatment or post endodontic treatment.
